IP Address Basics

How to Enable IPv6 on Router Safely

How to enable IPv6 on a router: first confirm your ISP supplies IPv6, then sign in to the router, open its Internet, WAN, or IPv6 page, select the connection type your ISP uses, enable prefix delegation and LAN Router Advertisements, save, and verify that a connected device receives a global IPv6 address. Keep the IPv6 firewall on: IPv6 usually removes the need for NAT, not the need for filtering.

Before you change the router

IPv6 works only when your ISP provides it, the router requests and routes it, and clients accept its advertisements. Check the ISP’s instructions for native or automatic IPv6, PPPoE, static service, VLANs, or gateway mode. A router toggle cannot create upstream service.

Update the firmware, record the WAN settings, and identify the device routing your home network. If an ISP gateway is in front, it must delegate a prefix, pass IPv6 through, or use a supported bridge mode. IPv6 can work while IPv4 uses CGNAT.

Keep it reversible: screenshot the old WAN and IPv6 pages, change one setting group, and reconnect a test device. If you lose the admin page, use the router login guide before a factory reset.

What the router needs to do

A home IPv6 router gets an address and delegated prefix on the WAN, then advertises a LAN subnet so devices can configure addresses and a default route. The IETF’s customer-edge router requirements describe this model.

What your ISP gives youRouter option to look forWhat to enter
Automatic or native IPv6Auto, Native, Dynamic IP, SLAAC, or DHCPv6Use automatic mode and enable prefix delegation.
PPPoE-based IPv6PPPoE or Native paired with WAN PPPoEShare the IPv4 session only when the ISP says it carries IPv6.

DHCPv6 can describe a WAN address request, while DHCPv6-PD requests the LAN prefix. SLAAC forms client addresses. Router Advertisements tell clients which router and prefix to use; see RFC 4861.

How to enable IPv6 on the router

Open the IPv6 settings

Connect over Wi-Fi or Ethernet and open the app or management page. Paths vary: TP-Link Advanced > IPv6, NETGEAR ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > IPv6, ASUS Advanced Settings > IPv6, Google Wifi Home > Wi-Fi > Settings > Advanced Networking, and eero Settings > Advanced networking > IPv6. Confirm labels in the TP-Link and NETGEAR guides.

Choose the WAN connection type

  1. Turn on IPv6 if the router has a separate switch.
  2. Select the ISP-matched mode. Do not guess a static address or tunnel.
  3. For dynamic service, use the vendor’s automatic, SLAAC, or DHCPv6 option and enable Prefix Delegation (DHCPv6-PD or IA_PD).
  4. For PPPoE or static service, use only the ISP’s credentials and values.
  5. Save and confirm a WAN address and delegated prefix. If they stay empty, troubleshoot the WAN before changing clients.

Configure the LAN advertisements

On the LAN, use Automatic or SLAAC unless the ISP requires otherwise. Enable Router Advertisements on each intended LAN, guest, or mesh segment. DHCPv6 may supply DNS, but it does not replace advertisements. See the DHCPv6 standard and SLAAC.

Do not copy a prefix from a screenshot. Use the prefix delegated to your connection. If the WAN works but delegation fails, fix the ISP or upstream gateway first.

Check the client device

Most current operating systems already have IPv6 enabled. Check automatic configuration and Router Advertisements instead of typing an address.

Windows 11

Press Win+R, enter ncpa.cpl, right-click the active adapter, choose Properties, and ensure Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is checked. Leave its address and DNS assignment automatic. Microsoft’s IPv6 guidance warns against unbinding it casually.

macOS

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Network, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, choose Details > TCP/IP, and set Configure IPv6 to Automatically. Choose Manually only with ISP-provided values. See Apple’s Mac guide.

Linux with NetworkManager

On Ubuntu and similar desktops, open Activities > Settings > Network (or Wi-Fi), select the gear beside the connection, open IPv6, and set Method to Automatic. The Ubuntu guide shows the connection editor; labels vary by distribution.

Android

There is normally no global IPv6 switch. Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet and tap the connected Wi-Fi network; manufacturer menus vary. Android enables IPv6 by default, so a missing address usually points to prefix delegation, Router Advertisements, or the ISP. Do not change Private DNS to solve addressing; see Google’s Android settings.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the network, and review its details. iOS has no general IPv6 switch; it normally accepts automatic router configuration. Apple’s Wi-Fi guide lists the per-network controls.

Verify that IPv6 actually works

Reconnect one client after saving. The router should show a WAN address and delegated prefix; the client should show a global address alongside any fe80:: link-local address. Link-local alone does not prove internet reachability.

  1. Disconnect a VPN or proxy for the first check.
  2. Open Loqmi’s public IP tool. An IPv6 result proves the browser reached the site over IPv6; an IPv4-only result calls for a router/client comparison.
  3. Repeat on a second device. One working device points to a client, guest, mesh, or VPN issue.
  4. Use Loqmi’s speed test for before/after performance, not as proof that every request used IPv6.
Success has three checks: WAN address and prefix, client address and route, and an IPv6 result from Loqmi.

Use IPv6 safely after setup

IPv6 gives devices routable addresses, not permission to accept connections. Keep the stateful firewall enabled and inbound traffic blocked by default. If you publish a service, allow only its protocol and port, restrict sources where possible, update the host, and require authentication. See the IETF’s gateway security recommendations; ICMPv6 supports normal discovery and path operation.

  • NAT and firewalling are different; lack of IPv4 NAT is not a reason to disable IPv6.
  • Do not block all ICMPv6; Neighbor Discovery and Path MTU Discovery need it.
  • Clients can have several IPv6 addresses. Prefer supported hostnames or policies over hard-coding an ISP address.
  • If IPv6 causes an outage, disable it only to diagnose, restore the old setting, and ask the ISP or router maker for the correct mode.

Key takeaways

  • IPv6 requires ISP support, a compatible router, and working LAN Router Advertisements; a single toggle is not enough.
  • Choose the WAN mode from the ISP’s instructions, enable prefix delegation for the LAN, and keep client addressing automatic.
  • Verify the WAN, the client, and Loqmi separately; a fe80:: address alone is only link-local.
  • IPv6 normally avoids NAT, but the router and each host still need conservative firewall rules.

Frequently asked questions

Will enabling IPv6 disable IPv4?

Usually no. A normal home setup is dual stack: the router keeps its IPv4 connection and adds IPv6 when the ISP provisions it. Sites and apps choose a usable path. If your provider offers IPv6-only service or uses a special transition design, follow its instructions instead of assuming both protocols will be present.

Why does my router show IPv6 but my laptop does not?

The router may have a WAN address but no delegated prefix or LAN Router Advertisements. Check that prefix delegation and LAN auto-configuration are enabled, reconnect the client, and confirm IPv6 is bound to its adapter. A guest network, access-point mode, or second router can also be a separate IPv6 segment.

Do I need port forwarding for IPv6?

Not in the IPv4 NAT sense. IPv6 normally routes a device’s address directly, so inbound access is controlled by the router’s IPv6 firewall rule. Leave unsolicited inbound traffic blocked and allow only a service you intentionally publish. The service host should also have its own firewall and authentication.

Can I use IPv6 behind an ISP gateway and my own router?

Sometimes, but the upstream gateway must either delegate a prefix to your router, pass IPv6 through, or be placed in a supported bridge mode. A simple IPv4-style double-NAT fix is not enough because IPv6 uses routing rather than home NAT. Check both vendors’ instructions before changing modes.
